- Common Types of Tanks Manufactured by Storage Tank Construction Companies
October 30, 2019
The construction industry is on a path of adopting different kinds of technology for its day-to-day operations. Although in this revolutionary phase, there are some processes that remain standard. For instance, manufacturing storage tanks. Though fabricating tanks are not a prime process undertaken by construction companies, there some companies that still do it. Besides this, there are dedicated storage tank construction companies that specialize in creating different types of tanks.
When it comes to tanks, their entire purpose is to store liquid as well as solid materials. The companies that expertise in manufacturing tanks provide steel tanks and tanks in other materials depending on the requirement. For in-depth information about tanks, listed below are some of the common types manufactured by companies.
Fixed-roof tanks are the type of tanks having a dome-shaped roof with a permanent cylindrical steel shell attached to the tank shell. This type of tank is considered to be the least expensive among the lot. Due to its conical shape, it is designed to be fully welded for both, liquids as well as vapor. As fixed-roof tanks have a pressure-vacuum valve, the tanks can function with minimum internal vacuum and pressure. The presence of the valve releases vapor in very small amounts and only when there is temperature change, increase in liquid level or even barometric pressure.
This type of tank is constructed for underground and above-ground services. As compared to other types of storage tanks, horizontal tanks are small in size. Hence, they are called small storage tanks. The common types of materials used to build this tank are steel, steel with a fiberglass overlay, fiberglass-reinforced polyester. The entire shape and size of horizontal tanks are built with the idea of ensuring structural integrity. As a result, this type has multiple access points inside the tank to ensure proper workflow. Besides this, horizontal tanks have manholes, gauge hatches, sample wells as well as pressure-vacuum vents.
Variable vapor space tanks
A variable vapor space tank is designed in a manner to handle the vapor volume fluctuations caused due to barometric pressure and temperature changes. The interior of this tank has a flexible membrane to provide expandable volume. Usually, variable vapor space tanks are used independently but they are also connected to vapor spaces of multiple fixed roof tanks. Variable vapor space tanks are available in two types: lifter roof tanks and flexible diaphragm tanks. Due to the heavy nature of this tank, bridge building equipment is used to move it from one location to another.
Liquefied natural gas tanks
As the name suggests, liquified natural gas (LNG) tanks are made to store liquified natural gas. This type of tank is made to fit above ground level, inside the ground and in LNG carriers. It is designed in a manner where it has two layers, the inner container has LNG and the outer layer has insulation materials. This type of tank can store LNG at a temperature as low as -162°C. Thus making it substantial in all ways.
